My Story

Dear friends and family, Since 2013 it has been my goal to complete the Oceans Seven. The Oceans Seven consist of seven long distance open-water swims, and is considered the marathon swimming equivalent to the seven summits mountaineering challenge. I have previously swum the English Channel in 2013 and the North Channel in 2015, each time raising awareness and money for causes very close to my heart. This year I hope to swim two of the Oceans Seven swims in less than a week. I will first attempt the Molokai Channel on a date between the 19th and 25th of June. This is a 42km swim in Hawaii from the island of Molokai to island of Oahu. Fewer than 40 people have successfully completed this swim. Whilst I will not be faced with the freezing conditions of previous swims, the Molokai Channel has its own unique challenges with an incredible range of aquatic life most notably tiger sharks and very large swells. Next, on the 28th of June, I will be attempting the Catalina Island swim. This swim is 32km from the Island of Catalina to the coast of California. This time the swim is a little shorter but I will be facing much colder conditions and swimming in an area that is infamous for Great White sharks. Between training for these ocean swims I am a teacher at St Pius X College Chatswood. In the lead up to my next two swims, I decided to give my students the opportunity to design a presentation which aimed to persuade me to raise money for their chosen charity through my swims. My mother, my sister and a fellow colleague were all there to help me choose which charity to swim for. Over the few days of presentations, we were all overwhelmed and completely humbled by the incredible effort that all of the groups had gone to in preparing their presentations. It was clear that they were all extremely passionate about their chosen cause. After all of the presentations, however, two of them really stole the show and resonated with all of the judges. I have chosen to raise money for (Kiss Goodbye to MS) and the (Kids Cancer Project). My name is Hayden Robertson and the charity that I would like awareness to be raised for is Kiss Goodbye to MS. MS or Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic disease that affects your central nervous system, interfering with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. I have been passionate for finding a cure for MS since I was very young and the passion to find it has just grown bigger as I’ve got older. Before I was born my grandmother was diagnosed with MS leaving my dad to care for her when he was very young. Sadly after a little while of living with the disease she passed away, unfortunately I never got to meet her. After my grandmother’s death my dad moved to Australia from England and after living here for a little while he got a job fundraising for MS and still does it now. Through my dad’s work I have met many extraordinary people who live with the disease and somehow manage to live everyday avoiding and overcoming the obstacles that MS keeps putting in front of them. These people have inspired me and made me even more passionate about the cause. Kiss Goodbye to MS raises money that goes towards the research and helps to find a cure for this terrible disease. When we were faced with the opportunity to make a change, we all were determined to be advocates for our causes. We instantly knew where we wanted the support to go as the charities we chose were close to our hearts. We know how these charities provide dearly needed funds for people in desperate need for help and assistance. Anybody can help us change the lives of the people who suffer from these terrible diseases and give hope to their families. Below is more information on both my swims.
