2017 Telstra Australian Charity Award winner!

After the incredible honour of being named the 2017 NSW Telstra Business of the Year and Charity of the year, the MS Research Australia team was invited to attend the National #TelstraBizAwards! Held at the International Convention Centre in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, some of the most innovative and inspiring organisations across Australia gathered to celebrate the achievements of the nation’s top small and medium businesses.

The Charity Award was the penultimate accolade to be announced (saving the best till last we like to think!) and it’s safe to say we were incredibly humbled as the fellow nominees were introduced. With causes including Shalom House which runs rehabilitation programmes, SleepBus which provides safe accommodation for the homeless and Big Hart, a Tassie- based social injustice awareness organisation, any of the wonderful charities nominated would clearly be worthy winners. We were surprised but incredibly delighted when it was announced that MS Research Australia was the Telstra Business Awards Australian Charity Award winner. The MS Research Australia table erupted in screams and cheers, proving that – while we are a small team, we sure know how to make a big impact! Whilst the other award winners may have taken two or three representatives to accept their awards, our entire table stormed the stage. MS Research Australia is a small team of passionate individuals, and we were so proud to stand on the stage together, the beams on all of our faces say it all.

The CEO of MS Research Australia, Dr Matthew Miles, took to the mic to deliver a rousing and passionate speech. Matthew spoke about the incredible progress we have made in the world of MS research, personally extending his congratulations to two of our star Aussie researchers who were our guests on the night. But what is clear to our entire team at MS Research Australia, Matthew also made clear to the room. We have made wonderful progress for relapsing MS, but we still have a long way to go in terms of understanding the reasons behind the progression of someone’s MS and how we can repair the damage done by the disease.

“While we have made outstanding progress in better understanding MS and developing treatments for people with relapsing remitting MS, we simply have not made the same progress for all types of this disease. The world is now united in finding the answers for people with primary and secondary progressive MS, developing newer and more effective treatments and ultimately stopping and reversing MS.”

“In many ways MS is like a rollercoaster. There are ups and downs, and every day is different. MS Research Australia is honoured to accept the Telstra Business Awards for the Australian Charity of the Year and we are committed to using this platform to deliver better outcomes for the 7 million Australians who know or love someone with MS. We don’t just need people with MS to care about research, we need all Australians to care.”

This award is proof that we are on the right track and stepping ever closer to our mission of freedom from MS. We know that our hard work is paying off. And when we say our hard work, we don’t just mean the twelve of us here in the office. Most importantly, we mean YOU, our community. Without your continued commitment and unwavering support, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do or reach these amazing milestones; thank you. This award shows that Australian’s believe in our dream of freedom from MS and they are backing us to get there.
